Kristell Schafferius

Kristell hails from Gatton, west of Brisbane and is a keen showjumper. Kristell and her husband now have two beautiful children but this has not stopped Kristell. Kristell does a fantastic role of organising and running the SEQ Foxhunter series.

Introduce your horses:

These are a few of my favourites at the moment out of the 20 odd horses we have:

  • LE Delilah - Warmblood (Selle Francais). Typical chestnut mare, feisty with attitude. Hates to touch a rail when jumping!
  • LE Palony - Warmblood x quarter horse. Palomino mare, only 15.1hh. A clever and careful jumper, future star for a junior rider.
  • Clearventure - Warmblood (Hanoverian). Jumping at C grade level. He loves his jumping, fast against the clock!
  • LE Alejandro - Warmblood (Selle Francais). Bay stallion. He has a superb temperament and attitude. This will be his first competitive season.

Where did your love of horse-riding begin and when did you get started within your discipline?

I have been involved with horses my whole life, my parents bred and had show horses. I had competed in dressage and eventing but at about age 15 my passion for show-jumping grew. I’m proud to say I have spent 20 years breeding, training, competing and selling horses.

Did you have any horse-riding role-models as a beginner rider?

Definitely my Dad instilled the motto that you never stop learning with horses. He was a bushman, bronc rider, a breeder and was successful in the show ring throughout his life. I also gain inspiration from the great women riders; Vicky Roycroft, Paula Hamood, Michelle Lang-McMahon and Cathy Graham. I love to see the women riders doing well against the men!

What have been some of your greatest achievements within your discipline?

  • Trans Tasman Young Rider Teams Event – 2nd place. Competing in New Zealand representing Queensland was fantastic!
  • Caboolture World Cup Qualifier – 2nd place. Coming 2nd on Dark Ages in my first ever World Cup class was unreal!
  • Queensland Young Horse Series - 1st on LE Crescent. Great achievement as I bred and trained LE Crescent myself.
  • Victorian Young Horse Classic Cycle – 1st place. This was my first big win Inter-state.

What are your aspirations for your riding career? Where do you see yourself in the future?

I have a young team of horses again and would love to see them climb the grades and be competitive at a top level. Some of the young stock I have look promising and I’m looking forward to getting them into the arena.

What have been some of your greatest achievements within your discipline?

My horses’ success stems from a great feeding program. I use a range of Mitavite products including Xtra Cool, Munga and Pro Sport for the competition horses and Breeda for youngsters and mares with foals. My team always looks happy, healthy and super shiny!

What is your all-time favourite Mitavite product and why?

I would have to say Breeda combined with the Performa 3 oil, the mares and foals blossom on it!

What has your experience as a Mitavite Partner Rider been like?

Mitavite has been a huge contributor in making my dreams come true. Mitavite has not only helped me as an individual but are always willing to provide our sport of show-jumping with sponsorship. This is what keeps our sport going! For several years now I have been organising the Mitavite Foxhunter Series in Queensland. This is a wonderful Series sponsored by Mitavite which targets young show-jumping horses just starting their career. The Series has 20 qualifying rounds at various shows and events throughout the year. The qualified horses then compete in the prestigious Mitavite Foxhunter Final. Along with Show-jumping Queensland and other Clubs we are always looking at making improvements to the Series. Thanks to Mitavite for the support.

Do you have any advice for beginner / aspiring riders?

Work hard and never give up. Horse sports can be like a rollercoaster ride - you have to learn to enjoy the ups and downs!
