Interview - Clem Smith

Introduce your horses:

My team of show jumpers are all very diverse but they have all been purpose bred for jumping.

  • 'Guru' Warmblood Cross Australian Bred
  • 'Kartoon de Breve' Imported Selle Francais Warmblood from France
  • 'Florina' Imported Hanoverian from Germany
  • Copabella Tattiana – Warmblood
  • Quality Euro Imported Sporthorse from England
  • Alite – Warmblood Australian Bred
  • Flow Rider – Warmblood Australian Bred
  • My daughter Jessie rides Belcam Cosmic & Isle of Nahru who are both Australian bred Warmbloods.

Where did your love of horse-riding begin and when did you get started within your discipline?

Riding was a necessity for me growing up on a Cattle Station in Central Queensland. I starting going to Drafts and then to Pony Club where my passion for Show Jumping started.

Did you have any horse-riding role-models as a beginner rider?

Both my parents are very good horseman and riders and who are still my role models.

What have been some of your greatest achievements within your discipline?

I have had great success at World Cup level having won four World Cup Qualifying Classes, in my career and placing Top 10 in many. The wins were at Sydney Royal, Adelaide Royal, Toowoomba and Shepparton. They were all on my great old campaigner Dark Ages. All these wins were so special, Darky always gave 100 percent. He won his last World Cup at Shepparton and I will never forget that win I knew it was his last at this level and he was just amazing. I was Runner Up Australian Senior Showjumping Champion 2013 with my up and coming Grand Prix horse Guru. He jumped his socks off at Werribee and certainly gave me an insight to his ability for the future. He has been named on the 2016 Equestrian Australia Rio Olympics Training Squad. I was also 6th Overall with Kartoon de Breve. A very exciting time for the team. I have won and placed in many classes over the years but I am very proud to have twice won the Len & Betty McVean Memorial Grand Prix in Victoria 2009 and 2013. This prestigious class is close to many riders hearts and winning this was always an aim for me but winning it twice was wonderful. In 2010 I was Team Captain for Australia at the New Zealand Horse of the Year Show Nations Cup. Dark Ages and I finished second Individually in the Silver Fern Stakes. It was an amazing experience to travel Overseas with your horse and be competitive. I could not have been prouder. 2013 saw Copabella Tattiana win the Queensland Future Star of the Year Series as well as being Runner Up Ruby Australian Champion. This mare is so much fun against the clock and is a winner. I always really enjoy the ride on her.

What are your aspirations for your riding career? Where do you see yourself in the future?

I am really looking forward to the next few years. I have a very strong team with three Grand Prix Horses Guru, Kartoon de Breve & Florina as well as some great up and coming horses at all levels. I want to continue to be competitive at the top level in Australia and maybe test the waters overseas. I am also really enjoying helping and coaching my daughter Jessie who has some very nice horses for the coming season. It is wonderful to be able to enjoy a sport with my family at my side.

Which Mitavite feeds and/or supplements do you use?

Mitavite Xtra-Cool can be found in every feed bin for every horse on our place. Xtra-Cool is economical with every thing you need nutritionally without the heat. We are loving the new Munga, a super addition for great topline and muscle as well as a wonderful coat. The horses just love it and once again no heat. Bonafide is a must for all horses on our property from young to old. This product is amazing for bone density and strength. Palatable with no waste.

What is your all-time favourite Mitavite product and why?

Xtra-Cool we use it for all horses and as it is popular it is readily available throughout Australia which is so important to me that the horses stay on the feed they know and like when travelling for competitions.

What has your experience as a Mitavite Partner Rider been like?

I have been a Mitavite partner rider for over 20 years. I am very proud to be associated with this company and really appreciate their ongoing support. Mitavite products are certainly the best available and I don't think you can go past them for quality. My horses look great and perform and the very top level and this is a credit to Mitavite.

Do you have any advice for beginner / aspiring riders?

Horses are wonderful creatures but you have to work with them, patients and hard work will get you a long way. Always enjoy the ride.
